A film that many considers the defining work of King Hu’s career, the international version of A Touch of Zen was the first film to win a prize at the Cannes Film Festival with the Technical Grand Prize in 1975. Based on a story in Strange Tales from Chinese Studio, this period epic about a scholar dragged into a fight between two fugitives and a powerful eunuch was a major undertaking years in the making. In addition to the impressive indoor sets, the film was also shot on locations in Hong Kong and Taiwan, including a stunning action sequence in a bamboo forest that has inspired films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). Hu created a unique and stylistic martial arts genre that is both aesthetically outstanding and mystical in its story telling. The film was condensed when first shown in Hong Kong but the digital restored version we’re showing this time is a more complete version loaned from Taipei Film Archive.
