Description
Youn Sun Nah has long defied easy categorisation. Since relocating from Seoul to Paris to pursue her vocal studies, the South Korean artist built a formidable reputation across jazz, folk, and contemporary song, earning widespread critical acclaim through a series of acclaimed albums on ACT Music. With Lost Pieces, released in February 2026 on Warner Music Arts, she marks both her 25th anniversary as a recording artist and a decisive new chapter: an album composed entirely of her own songs, picking up the thread of self-authored work she began with Waking World (2022). Where that record announced her arrival as a songwriter, Lost Pieces consolidates and deepens that voice — intimate, unflinching, and resolutely contemporary.
Backed by a core quartet of French jazz musicians — Matthis Pascaud on guitars, Laurent Vernerey on bass, Tony Paeleman on keyboards, and Raphaël Chassin on drums and percussion — Youn Sun Nah expands her orchestral palette with a string trio, David Patrois on marimba and vibraphone, and a brass section comprising Alexis Bourguignon on trumpet and flugelhorn, Christophe Panzani on tenor saxophone, and Robinson Khoury on trombone. The arrangements, co-produced with Axel Matignon, are at once sumptuous and disciplined: strings that hover rather than declare, keyboards that leave chords deliberately unresolved, and a rhythm section that privileges texture over pulse. Songs such as Shell of Me, A Map of Pain, and Collapse navigate themes of doubt, loss, and separation with a quiet emotional precision that ultimately resolves into self-empowerment — a journey through the dark that finds its own light.
